There’s No Way I’m Getting On That Plane!

Have I got a Fear of Flying?

There are different degrees of fear and many people start to feel anxious upon take off or landing but some of us start to feel anxious months in advance of a planned trip or when we see a picture of an aeroplane.

There are two categories of phobia called internal concerns and external concerns. For some of us the fear is internal. We are concerned we will embarrass ourselves on the plane by losing control (eg, having a panic attack , going hysterical or losing control of their bodily functions). For other people, there maybe external concerns such as the fear of terrorism, lack of control in flying the plane or turbulence.

How Therapy can help with your Fear of Flying

Because the fear of flying can be made up of a complex range of factors, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) can be an effective treatment to use because it is tailored to our needs and issues. An important part of treatment is to discover the root cause of the phobia. This is not always obvious but with guided discovery, we can uncover why we are afraid of flying. Finding out the root cause goes a long way to finally coping with the anxiety. For example, some of us have had a traumatic experience in the past whilst others might have seen something in the media and it has stayed with them. Terrible images might appear when we think of flying or see a plane and this might evoke intense emotions. CBT works to help us develop coping strategies to manage the anxiety we face at every step of the way
